Once the heart of leisure in Cuatro Ciénegas — now under ecological recovery, on its way to being a meeting place between people and nature again.
A 207-hectare natural area in Cuatro Ciénegas — riparian forest, scrub, and grassland — being restored by Fundación Pro Cuatrociénegas. For generations it was where the town's families came to rest and play, until overexploitation of the aquifer dried up the river that ran through it. Today we're working to bring back its vegetation, its water, and its life — and to turn it into a regenerative ecotourism destination.
The families of Cuatro Ciénegas grew up here: the river, the shade, the picnics. Agro-industrial pumping of the aquifer dried the springs that fed it, and with the water went the life around it.
El Cañón was never forgotten — and that's why its recovery matters so much: it means giving the community back a piece of its own story.
In the coming years*, El Cañón will open its trails: hiking, mountain biking, rappelling, birdwatching, stargazing nights, and traditional palapas for gathering and cooking the way people used to. All with clear limits to protect what's been recovered — and weaving in the region's local history and Indigenous culture.
The river will return. We want you there to see it.
